Primary Mission

At Seeds of Change our primary mission is to steer students towards careers in science. At the same time, we expose your students to tropical field research, and immerse them in an environment requiring collaboration and creative thinking. This exposure that is almost impossible in the high school environment. Experiments have shown this has a dramatic affect on learning. One example is shown in the graphic showing test scores in a University Physics class in which half the students were subjected to standard classroom lecture and test environment and half were broken into collaborative groups to work on projects centered on the same subject area as the class room students. You can see the results in the graphic.

In the months preceding the trip, we prepare your students for these field research trips with six (6) two- to three-hour classroom sessions. Your student has these hours of preparation before the trip and 24 hours per day once they are in the field. It is a shame to waste the accelerated rate of learning that these students encounter without some further future goal. It is with this understanding that we have elected to orient this program toward future professional education goals that are synergistic with not only college years but subsequent careers.

We are driven by today's environment where 50% of college graduates either have no job or they are under employed in relatively disappointing jobs with no future growth potential. We intend to have some portion of our students return a second year for more complex science exposure. Second year trips will emphasize bioinformatics, a science not even embedded in the university undergrad curriculum, much less high school curriculum.

We intend to launch these students onto a college education path that not only leads toward impressive jobs upon college graduation, but also has the propensity, with their learned skill set, to secure valuable lab jobs working in university research labs during their undergrad years.
