ServiceProjects

Service is an important component in today’s educational environment. U.S. students tend not to understand the drastic life style differences between themselves and 3rd world peers. In the case of students finding themselves in this remote location they will discover that the population is faced with subsistence level activities. There are no movie theaters or restaurants or libraries or concerts. It is in this environment that each student group will mount some service project that will improve the quality of life for villagers in this remote jungle region. Each group will develop its own service project concept. In one case a group brought used children’s shoes and distributed them to youngsters in the nearby village. You can see in the eyes of the child that this makes a difference in a life.

As part of this endeavor, our students will be exposed to local children and there will be joint activities(like perhaps a soccer game) to bring the two vastly different cultures together. Students will have meals hosted by local families on occasion where they will experience the living conditions of local families.

One surprising outcome of these immersions in this remote village culture expressed by out North American students is that despite the economic disparity these poor villagers are amazing happy. Perhaps this brings a new appreciation of value systems but without doubt the impact of helping these village people and seeing first hand the difference in another persons life brings a whole new feeling of satisfaction unlikely to have been felt before.
